WGA Evans Scholars Magazine, Spring 2019
mental health issues cant hold a job they dont have insurance and theyre not getting the treatment they need Its a vicious cycle What about the things youre excited about I think we will be seeing some very dramatic changes in how medical care has been delivered We dont equate Apple Amazon Chase or Berkshire Hathaway with healthcare yet they may be the biggest disruptors in the delivery of healthcare going forward Those companies will be redefining how we deliver care track health outcomes predict health needs and pay for healthcare Technology for wearable devices and home monitoring will change how we gather health data and use real time data for some decisions The ability to monitor chronic illnesses daily and in our own homes will change how we look at and treat many illnesses Wearable devices may allow for early detection of lifethreatening illnesses months before a doctor would The speed of technology change will only increase this will result in longer life expectancies treatments for illnesses with less side effects and better quality of life for all of us Can you share some highlights of your experiences volunteering at the Western Open BMW Championship Ive helped run the medical facilities for about 20 Western Opens BMW Championships Were prepared for any illness or injury of a fan we also treat the players their families and the media Its generated a lot of friendships over the years Two cool stories One year Sergio Garcias caddie came down with pneumonia the Tuesday before the tournament We took care of him and by Thursday he had turned a corner and caddied for Sergio the rest of the week After Sergio who got a nice check that year personally thanked me for helping his caddie Another year I got called to the 10th fairway to see Scott Verplank whos a diabetic He needed insulin quickly or his blood sugar was about to go off the wall We sent a courier to the pharmacy and got the insulin He injected himself on the 12th tee 35 minutes later and was able to finish the tournament Two months later he sent a nice picture and thank you Any final reflections on the impact of caddying and the Evans Scholars Program We are so fortunate to have received the Evans Scholarship and caddying has rewarded all of us beyond the education it provided As a young student I got to caddie in two Western Opens I chose to caddie for Steve Melnyk both years he wrote me a letter of recommendation for the Scholarship Forty years later we remain great friends play golf together vacation with families and he honored me with the opportunity to caddie for him at the 2014 Masters Par 3 contest the lifelong thrill of any caddie Many dont realize the life lessons caddying provides We learn to show up to work early the importance of teamwork good work ethic communication skills and continuous self improvement The harder you work the more friends and money you make Instill those skills in a young kid then give him or her the opportunity for a paid education and you are building future leaders Earning the Evans Scholarship proves hard work on the course and in the classroom pays off It instills pride in not only you but also your family and the financial burden relief has as much of an impact on your family as it does on you personally To be able to call yourself an Evans Scholar for life is truly an honor matters decades in medicine Kevin Most talks to students at the Winter Meeting 25
